AMERICAN HAUNTINGS' 22nd ANNUAL
"DEAD OF WINTER" FESTIVAL
FEBRUARY 8, 2020 | 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
AT THE HAUNTED MINERAL SPRINGS HOTEL IN ALTON, ILLINOIS
Join American Hauntings for the 22nd annual Dead of Winter event! Celebrate ghosts, hauntings, and the macabre at the mysterious Mineral Springs Hotel in Alton, Illinois -- one of the most haunted locations in the state -- and be chilled by presentations on ghosts, hauntings, the unexplained and much more! Meet authors and speakers on strange phenomena, network with other ghost enthusiasts from all over the Midwest, sign up to win raffle prizes -- including books; unusual prizes and collectibles, tickets to the 2020 Haunted America Conference; and more! Make this a haunted weekend you won't soon forget!
Admission to the Daytime Event is FREE, with a canned or non-perishable item to benefit local food banks in the area. There are nearly 20,000 people in need in the region, and more than 7,000 of them are children. We'll be donating all of the items collected to a local charity, so bring a canned good or non-perishable food item with you for entry to this eerie event!
HELD AT THE HAUNTED MINERAL SPRINGS HOTEL!
The 2020 Festival will return to the Mineral Springs Hotel in downtown Alton, Illinois, located at 301 East Broadway Street. From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, we'll be offering a roster of speakers on the supernatural. You'll also be able to check out the vendors’ tables, see the building, sign up for raffle prizes and -- if you're one of the lucky one who sign up in advance -- take part in one of our daytime workshops and pick up your tickets for the After Hours dinner hosted by Troy Taylor or the late-night ghost hunts of the famously haunted old hotel or the eerie First Unitarian Church! It’s going to be THE supernatural weekend of the winter and we hope to see you at the Mineral Springs for a haunted day of fun and to help out a worthy cause!
SPECIAL AND AFTER-HOURS EVENTS FOR DEAD OF WINTER 2020
Don’t miss out on this year’s Special and After-Hours events, including two events that we have never offered at Dead of Winter before! These events are offered on a first-come / first-served basis and are available to Dead of Winter attendees only! Tickets must be picked up at the daytime event — no exceptions!
DAYTIME BLACK MIRROR SCRYING WORKSHOPS
TWO WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE AT 12:30 AND 2:30 PM
Hosted by author and researcher Rene Kruse, these unique and unusual workshops are being offered for the first time at the Dead of Winter event — and each will be held in the haunted confines of the old swimming pool at the Mineral Springs! For thousands of years, black mirrors have been valued as one of the most powerful ways to open the gates to the spirit world. In this workshop, you will learn how to scry (gaze) into a black mirror to make contact with the dead. Visions, sounds, smells, and even tactile sensations may arise, and, of course, vary by individual. Mirrors will be provided for all attendees, age 16 and over.
TWO TIME SLOTS AVAILABLE!

AN EVENING WITH H.H. HOLMES
DINNER AND PRESENTATION BY TROY TAYLOR
Join Troy and Lisa for this special Dead of Winter After-Hours dinner, another night in their “An Evening with…” series of events! This eerie night will include a catered dinner and then, after dinner, author Troy Taylor will be presenting “Murder by Gaslight,” the true story infamous serial killer H.H. Holmes, who created a “Murder Castle” in Chicago during the 1893 World’s Fair and lured an unknown number of victims to their deaths! Discover the horrific life and crimes of Homes, who was dubbed the “Monster of 63rd Street",” and explore the legends that have followed in his wake, from his alleged ties to Jack the Ripper to the “Holmes Curse.” This is a night of history, horror, and hauntings that you don’t want to miss!

Discover for yourself if the old swimming pool, the "Jasmine Lady" staircase, the bottling plant and slaughterhouse, the suicide room, and more are truly as haunted as so many people claim! FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH GHOST HUNT | 9:00 PM

SPEAKERS AND PRESENTERS FOR 2020
TROY & LISA AND CODY BECK FROM THE AMERICAN HAUNTINGS PODCAST:
Live from the 2020 Dead of Winter Festival, Troy and Cody (with the always-needed assistance of Lisa) will be doing a special podcast episode for the event. Afterwards, we'll be opening the episode up to attendees to ask questions, tell stories, and take part in the show. If you aren’t familiar with the podcast, check it out here, and get ready for another special episode from this year’s festival!
Later in the evening, Troy will also be hosting “An Evening with H.H. Holmes” as part of the Dead of Winter Festival’s After-Hours Events. See the section above to get more information about this additional event!
Robert is the author of four books in the “Haunted Louisville” series, about the history and hauntings of Louisville, Kentucky. He is also the creator and host of the Louisville Ghost Walks, which has been offering eerie walking tours of the downtown area for more than 15 years. In addition, he is also a middle school social studies teacher in the Jefferson County Public School system and an activist for the homeless community in the Louisville area. He brings his unique storytelling ability to this event for the first time!
As a past recipient of the Wisconsin Researcher of the Year Award, Allison leads haunted history tours and presents on a wide variety of Fortean topics including ghosts, poltergeists, UFOs, cryptids, and demonic possession. Allison is the only investigator who has visited all the reported Chicago Mothman sighting locations from 2011 and 2017. Allison continues her search for the truth by investigating paranormal oddities around the world, most recently in Kent, England and on Oahu, Hawaii. You can hear more from Allison on the weekly podcast See You On The Other Side.
LUKE NALIBORSKI AND LEN ADAMS:
Luke and Len — two long-time investigators, tour guides, and an integral part of American Hauntings — have been hosting “Strange Stuff” at the Haunted America Conference for many years. In the early 2000s, our friend John Brill suggested it as a way to allow the audience to participate in the event with their own stories and experiences, while also hearing about ghost stories and haunted places experienced by the presenters. At this year’s Dead of Winter event, Luke and Len will be a “sneak preview” of Strange Stuff to kick off the day!
Both Luke and Len are authors of a number of books about haunted history and personal experiences and Luke is also the owner of I Had That Toy!, a toy and collectible store in Belleville, Illinois.
TOBIAS AND EMILY WAYLAND:
Tobias and Emily are the founders of the Singula Fortean Society and, for the first time, they’re bringing their Repository of Unusual Stories Dead of Winter! They want to talk to you and record YOUR experiences with the unexplained, which will be added to The Singular Fortean Society’s YouTube channel! Be sure to stop by and see them and share your stories of the strange, the haunted, the unexplained, and bizarre!
Tobias is a passionate fortean who has been actively investigating the unusual for over a decade. The first five years of his investigative career were spent as a MUFON field investigator, and following that he investigated independently prior to becoming the head writer and editor for the Singular Fortean Society. But it was a series of formative paranormal events incorporating elements associated with hauntings, nighttime visitations, and alien abduction that as a young child first aroused his interest in the anomalous. He's carried that interest with him throughout his life, attempting to draw connections between seemingly disparate phenomena in an effort to better understand the impossible.
Emily is an ardent craftsperson and devoted monster enthusiast with degrees in both photography and design. An accomplished artist, designer, and photographer, Emily is responsible not only for the Singular Fortean Society's aesthetic, but also the examination of any photographic or video evidence. Her lifetime love affair with monsters of all varieties has led her to pursue them in real life, and she hopes that her expertise in photography will help her capture one—at least on film.
Anyone who has ever attended the Haunted America Conference knows Rene (even though she thinks no one ever remembers her) and she has vital role in American Hauntings since almost the beginning. Rene grew up in Kansas, lived in Texas, and has been in Southwest Pennsylvania for more than 25 years. She holds a PhD from Texas A&M and teaches Applied Engineering and Technology at California University in Pennsylvania. She has been fascinated with ghosts and all things haunted for her entire life and has been actively investigating hauntings for more than 30 years. She has also co-authored several books about haunted history with Troy Taylor.
As part of our daytime special events at Dead of Winter, Rene will be hosting two Black Mirror Scrying Workshops in the building’s haunted swimming pool. You can get signed up for this by using the links above.
