DISCONNECTED FROM DEATH
PRESENTED BY APRIL SLAUGHTER

From the God-fearing Puritans to the aftermath of the Civil War, the Victorian descent into mourning to modern day funeral traditions, join April Slaughter as she takes you on a journey through America's history with death, dying, and how they've shaped our society today. Far too often, the traditions and rituals of the past have been presented as macabre practices, and while some of them were unusual, each of them served a purpose. No matter how bizarre they might seem, they managed to present a vivid portrait of how we are all intricately connected to death.

Our ancestors dealt with death on a daily basis, dreaming up countless traditions and rituals to try and better understand it.Society today, however, has disconnected from death. In years past, Americans died at home. Bodies were prepared for burial in our kitchens and funerals were held for the dead in the family parlor. Now we die under the sterile conditions of hospitals, far removed from the people who love us, and our deaths have become a business... and one that isn't exactly there to assist the living solely in comfort and healing.

Learn what traditions our ancestors created, how they've evolved, or even disappeared altogether. Discover options for modern-day mourning you might not be aware of, what is legally required and what is not, and familiarize yourself with the safeguards that have been put into place to protect not only your pocketbook, but your peace of mind when you're faced with the loss of a loved one.
